Many students in The Art of Nourishment ask about classic formulas for stubborn cycle patterns. Two that sometimes come up are Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan and Shi Quan Da Bu Wan. In plain medical language, PCOS often shows up as irregular or absent periods, trouble ovulating, acne or excess hair growth, and sometimes insulin resistance; endometriosis involves tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus and can bring painful periods, pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, and fertility struggles. Adenomyosis can also cause heavy, painful bleeding and pelvic fullness.

In East Asian Medicine, Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan is the more “moving” formula. It is traditionally used when there is blood stasis: fixed pelvic pain, clots, congestion, or a mass-like feeling. Shi Quan Da Bu Wan is different. It is more of a restoring tonic, traditionally used when someone feels tired, pale, depleted, cold, or weakened after long illness or blood loss. In practice, that means Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan is often the more direct fit for pain-and-congestion patterns, while Shi Quan Da Bu Wan may be the better support when a student has been worn down by them.

Evidence for Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan is encouraging: reviews of randomized trials suggest it may improve ovulation and pregnancy rates in PCOS and may reduce pain and lesion measures in endometriosis, especially alongside conventional care.  For Shi Quan Da Bu Wan, modern evidence is much stronger for fatigue and anemia-type recovery than for PCOS or endometriosis directly. Coupled together they have good chance of supporting women in PCOS and endometriosis.

Please keep this gentle and sensible. Do not self-prescribe in pregnancy. If you have bleeding after menopause, worsening pain, severe fatigue, dizziness, anemia, a new pelvic mass, or you are trying to conceive, involve a qualified practitioner and your medical team. Track pain, flow, clots, energy, digestion, and mood for 2–3 cycles, and always check label directions because strengths vary widely between products.
