Energetics of Food and the Role of the Spleen
What is the primary Organ of Digestion in TCM?
🌿 The Energetics of Food and the Central Role of the Spleen
A refined understanding of the energetics of food can profoundly enhance a practitioner’s ability to nourish and support their patients. As Hippocrates so eloquently stated, “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” This simple yet profound statement reflects a truth that has, in many ways, been lost in modern healthcare.
In contemporary Western medicine, dietary guidance is often secondary to pharmaceutical intervention. One might even feel that the implicit message is: eat as you wish, and should imbalance arise, there will be a medication to manage the symptoms—followed, if necessary, by further medications to address the side effects. This approach, while sometimes necessary, can lead us further away from an intimate understanding of the body.
Would it not be simpler—and more empowering—to understand how to nourish the body appropriately in the first place?
Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a different perspective. Sun Simiao, the great physician of the 7th century, wrote that a skilled doctor should first understand the nature of disease and then treat it through diet, turning to medicine only when dietary therapy is insufficient. He believed that only those proficient in dietary therapy could be considered truly superior physicians.
This view places food not merely as sustenance, but as a primary means of healing.
