Understanding the Spleen in this conversation


In The Art of Nourishment, when we speak about the Spleen, we are using the language of East Asian medicine, where the “Spleen” refers to a functional digestive system rather than the anatomical spleen described in modern biomedicine. In that traditional framework, the Spleen is said to “transform and transport” food and fluids, helping the body extract nourishment and move it where it is needed. Modern sources on Traditional Chinese Medicine also note that these concepts do not map neatly onto Western organ anatomy, so it is best to read them as different ways of describing digestive function and regulation. 


Why too much liquid can feel heavy


From an integrative point of view, the traditional advice not to “flood the Spleen” makes sense when it is framed as volume. Drinking water with a meal does not suddenly stop digestion. Mayo Clinic notes that water generally supports digestion, helps break down food, contributes to saliva and stomach fluids, and can help prevent constipation. A small physiologic study likewise found that 200 mL of water raised stomach pH quickly, but only for about three minutes, suggesting that the effect is brief rather than a lasting shutdown of stomach acidity. 


The more relevant issue for many people is simple fullness. Large amounts of fluid can increase stomach volume and, in sensitive people, contribute to post-meal heaviness, early fullness, bloating, or discomfort. Those are also classic symptoms described in dyspepsia and related upper-GI disorders. Studies using water-loading tests show that liquid volume itself can provoke satiety and bloating, especially in people with functional digestive sensitivity. A note to make here: When the Stomach has stretched to it's full mechanical capacity, it has gone past the state at which it is able to carry out gastric peristalsis, the grinding and mixing of the contents of the stomach, and the result of that is that the body creates pathogenic factors, among which is dampness, which we call "Putting on weight".


Why warm fluids are often preferable


Temperature matters too. Human motility studies found that drinks at body temperature produced fewer disturbances in upper digestive motility than very cold or hotter drinks, with cold drinks causing the strongest early effects. That does not prove every person must avoid cool water all the time, but it does support the old clinical observation that warm, gentle fluids are often easier on digestion. “Warm” need not mean very hot.


A balanced practice.


So the principle is not deprivation. It is rhythm. A few sips of warm water, tea, or broth with a meal are usually reasonable, while the bulk of daily hydration can be taken between meals, when it supports the body without crowding digestion. This becomes especially important if you are eating more fiber, because adequate fluids are still needed for bowel regularity. There are exceptions: people with heart, kidney, or liver disease may need individualized fluid advice, and people after bariatric surgery are often specifically told to separate fluids from meals because extra volume can cause discomfort and reduce intake of nutrient-dense foods. 


The gentle takeaway


In practice, “not flooding the Spleen” means eating with presence, chewing well, and letting the meal remain the center of the meal. Warm fluids can accompany food; they do not need to dominate it. For many people, that small shift alone creates a surprising difference: less heaviness, less bloating, and a clearer sense that nourishment has actually landed.
