Internal heat and TCM
When heat is a problem
## Cooling the Inner Heat: Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan
Beating internal heat in summer can be tricky. The weather is warm, the days are long, and many of us are moving quickly between work, meetings, family, screens, and responsibilities. Before we know it, the body can begin to feel overheated from the inside: flushed, restless, sweaty, unsettled, and slightly “too wired” to fully relax.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, not all heat is treated the same way. Sometimes heat comes from the outside — the weather, the room, the season. At other times, it has more of an internal quality. It may show as night heat, restlessness, agitation, poor sleep, dry mouth, anxiety, palpitations, or a mind that will not quite settle. **Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan** is a classic formula traditionally used for patterns involving Heart and Kidney Yin deficiency, deficiency heat, insomnia, restlessness, palpitations, and difficulty concentrating. ([Sacred Lotus][1])
For peri-menopausal and menopausal women, this type of internal heat may feel familiar. Hot flushes can bring sudden warmth, sweating, flushing, and sometimes anxiety-like sensations; when they happen at night, they may disturb sleep. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan may be considered when the presentation fits the pattern: heat with depletion, agitation with fatigue, restlessness with dryness, or sleep disturbance with a sense that the body cannot fully cool and descend.
Although this conversation often centres on women, men can experience this kind of internal heat and restlessness too. The formula is not “for menopause” alone; it is for a particular pattern.
A good Chinese Medicine herbalist can help you decide whether Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan is appropriate for you. This matters because herbal formulas are matched to the person, not simply the symptom.
So, if summer heat, night sweats, hot flushes, restlessness, or a busy unsettled mind are making life uncomfortable, speak with your local Chinese Medicine practitioner. Sometimes cooling down is not only about fans, pillows, and sheets. Sometimes it is about nourishing the deeper waters of the body.
