Trusting the Body

Trusting the Body - a deeper level of knowing

Trusting the Body

Opening

Trusting the body begins with learning to hear its quiet, reliable signals beneath the louder voices of habit, craving, emotion, and hurry. Many people are not immediately able to tell the difference between true hunger, stress, boredom, comfort-seeking, or the pull of routine, and that is not a failure. Intuitive Eating describes this as a return to attunement: the body has wisdom, but rules, beliefs, and old patterns can interrupt our ability to hear it clearly.

Gentle Learning

For students of The Art of Nourishment, this is gradual work. You do not need to “get it right” overnight. The practice is to become more curious and less forceful: What does hunger feel like in my body? What does comfortable satisfaction feel like? Which meals leave me clearer, steadier, and more supported afterward? Mindful eating is built on paying attention to eating experiences, body sensations, and internal and external cues without judgment, using the senses to notice what truly nourishes.

Three Practical Steps

Pause before meals. Take one slow breath and ask, “What do I need right now?”

Use a sensory check. Notice the first few bites—the taste, texture, smell, and the body’s response.

Keep a tiny journal. After eating, write one line: “Do I feel more energized, calm, and settled?”

From Guidance to Trust

In the early stages, external guidance can be very supportive. A simple meal rhythm, course structure, or practitioner support can help create enough steadiness for the body’s signals to become clearer. Over time, the aim is to rely less on rules and more on lived experience. Small experiments can help: eating with fewer distractions, slowing the pace of a meal, or noticing whether a particular food leaves you satisfied for longer. Signs of true nourishment often include steadier energy after eating, greater emotional ease, fewer urgent cravings, and calmer digestion.

A Simple Caution

If you have persistent symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, or ongoing abdominal pain, please seek medical advice rather than relying on self-experiment alone.

Reflection

As you practice this week, ask yourself: What does “enough” feel like in my body? Which meals leave me feeling most supported, clear, and at home in myself?
